When you hear the word "casserole", does an image of your grandmother come to mind? Or do you picture a 1950/1960s housewife with an apron and pearls?

Here's an interesting fact: "casserole" could refer to either the actual dish itself the food is cooked in or the food that is being cooked in the dish.

Another fun fact: casseroles gained popularity in the United States around the 1950s.

Casseroles may sound like something that could be disastrous (how many sitcoms have we seen someone present a burnt-up casserole?), but they can actually turn out to be easy, delicious and (dare I say it?) fun to create.

Now there are a lot of ways to cook a casserole, but there are three major parts you need for a good casserole dish:

  • Base: Usually, this is where the main texture and flavor for the dish come from and is often the star/center of the meal. Often, this is some type of meat or fish and/or cheese and vegetables.

  • Extender: This is what helps make the dish thicker and heartier. Here is where starches and carbs often fill up the dish, such as potatoes, rice, beans, etc.

  • Binder: Often a thicker component (usually liquid, but not always) that brings the whole dish together, like cream, broth, milk, or eggs.

Once you have those three components together, you can use a casserole as the canvas to release your personality and creativity. You can make casseroles for break, lunch and dinner; you can make them meaty, vegan or vegetarian; you can add as much or as little as you like; you can use it as a way of getting rid of produce that might be preparing to go bad, etc.

We about the love of casseroles, so call grandma up and tell her "I'm taking over dinner tonight!"
